My clients hire me to conduct mold inspections, testing and remediation. I frequently get calls from homeowners who see a black substance somewhere in their home and immediately assume it's "Toxic Black Mold" or Stachybotrys. They are concerned about the adverse health affects associated with this dangerous mold and want my advice on what they should do. I tell them that most mold found in homes is black in color and that it doesn't necessarily mean it produces mycotoxins or is toxic.
The best way to handle this situation is to hire a certified mold inspector like myself who will not only inspect the suspect area but the entire home. I recommend taking a Tape Lift sample and Air tests to determine the type and toxicity of the mold. The air tests will determine if the mold has gone airborne and cross contaminated other areas of the home as well as determining exactly what you are being exposed to. This is very useful in developing a protocol for remediation should it be necessary. Note: Any type of mold growth should be remediated by a certified company and we offer a 10 year warranty that mold will not return. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
